One Laptop Per Child
One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) aims to provide each child with a low-cost, highly durable laptop through which they can expand their education. They specially design hardware, content, and software to encourage collaborative, joyful, self-empowering learning. They believe that access to this educational tool, and education itself, is the basis for full human, social, economic, and democratic development. So far, OLPC has reached over 2.4 million children and teachers in 42 different countries.
Mission Statement: OLPC’s mission is to empower the world’s poorest children through education.
Family Discretionary Grant. The Skees Family Foundation chose to support One Laptop Per Child in 2007. Because we have access to technology and information here in the U.S., we believe passionately that everyone else should too. Access to information leads to individual, community, and national freedom. We also agree with OLPC that education is one of the necessary factors in achieving economic and social development. If we have to, we’ll get there just one laptop at a time.
